Review: Bride of Chucky (1998)

Bride of Chucky
IMDB rate: 5,2
Genre: Slasher, Comedic

To be honest, Bride of Chucky was the very first Chucky movie I've ever seen. Not so strange since I was not even born when the first three came out. For me this was how Chucky looked like but of course, at that time I had not seen Child's Play yet. I think Bride of Chucky is a funny movie. Not really scary but it's a nice movie to watch. It's not really good but for a comedic movie I think it's go-able (is that even a word?). Anyway, since I saw the first Child's Play movie I of course realized that that is the real Chucky and I liked Child's Play a lot more than Bride of Chucky. I haven't seen Child's Play 2 or 3 yet though, eventually I will!

Serial killer Charles Lee Ray is back! This time his girlfriend Tiffany has revived him, once again in the form of the popular "Chucky" doll. Shortly after the "happy" couples reunion, Chucky kills her and brings her back in the form of a girl's bridal doll. The two then embark on a killing spree en route to dig up Ray's corpse, which was buried with a Satanic voodoo charm capable of bringing back the dead.

First of all, I've always liked the music in the Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky movies. It's very fitting for the movie I think. I also like the comedic twist on Chucky, you learn a lot more about his personality. Even though the movie is not very good I like watching it. I must admit though that I have seen the movie too much, so that's why I don't really enjoy it anymore. I do remember that I loved it the first time I watched it, mainly because I was terrified of dolls and a combination of comedy and something terrifying is kinda cool I guess. I'm not a big fan of Seed of Chucky though, it's not funny or scary and the Glen/Glenda doll is kinda lame.

I like the references to other horror movies, Hellraiser, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and every other horror legend can be found somehow in this movie. I also liked Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany, her voice is annoying but also has something seducing. I don't know. She's not a very good actress but it's not very bothering in this movie, since it's not a very serious movie.

I don't mind Chucky's look in the movie, it's very believable since the guy has been blown up/cut up or whatever for a million times already so it's logical he looks like this. Also, it gives him a tough look. I do prefer his normal look though.

I think Bride of Chucky is a fun movie. but don't compare it to the Child's Play movies. It's definitely different. I think not everybody will like this movie. It's definitely not a good movie, but it can be enjoyable to watch.

Review: Carriers (2009)

Carriers
IMDB rate: 6,1
Genre: Virus, Post-Apocalyptic

I wanted to see this movie for so long already. I believe I've started watching it once but for some reason I never finished it. Can't remember why though, it's not that it's a movie that is so terrible I can't watch it. The movie itself is quite good to be honest. Well, quite good might be too much but it's certainly enjoyable to watch. It's not a horror movie though, there are not really tensed moments and the only thing that might be considered horror are the infected people. They are just infected people who die after a while by the way, no zombies. I think the movie is mainly about surviving in a lost world, and most important is to save yourself rather than another.

In a world devastated by an outbreak, Brian (Chris Pine), his girlfriend Bobby (Piper Perabo), his brother Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci) and their friend, Kate (Emily VanCamp), are heading to a beach where the brothers spent their childhood vacations expecting it to be a sanctuary. When their car breaks down on the road in the desert, they negotiate with a man called Frank (Christopher Meloni), who is also stranded but without gas. He's trying to get his daughter Jodie to the hospital (she is infected with a disease of some kind), they all decide to travel together. During the journey, massive moral dilemmas arise, as event head into a downward spiral.

The acting in the movie is very good. The cast exist from a excellent bunch of young talented people which makes the movie enjoyable to watch. I was especially impressed by Lou Taylor Pucci, someone who I've only seen in one movie before where he played a strange character (I haven't seen the new Evil Dead yet, where he also plays in). He seems like a lame person in this movie so seeing him man up was a nice sight. Chris Pine is also an excellent actor, even though he plays a bit of an asshole in the movie, it was not annoying to watch (for example, yesterday I watched the movie Boo were also a big asshole plays in, but he was annoying to watch).

The movie itself is good but it's quite slow. It only lasts for 90 minutes but those 90 minutes sure take long in this case. In my opinion it needed a bit more action or a better storyline. I at least wanted to know the cause of the infection but unfortunately you'll never know. I always find it very interesting in an infection movie to know the different causes for the infection. It's not a movie where you lose your focus easily, because you want to know where it's leading to. But now I finished watching it and think about the movie I find it hard to describe the use for it. Sure, it's about surviving the infection but it needed a deeper going story I think.

The movie is certainly not a horror movie, even though it's described everywhere like it is. I think it's better described as a drama. Maybe with a touch of horror, but that's only because of the infection.
The movie has a very touching side. You can leave people behind when you don't know them, but what if a loved one gets infected? What do you do? Can you live with yourself after? This is why the movie is a drama. It's certainly a good drama, but please don't get fooled by the wrong marketing.

The problem with this movie is that it's too slow, also it needed a deeper going story. It's a nice movie to watch but I think this is mainly because of the good writing and the excellent acting. The story itself is not much. Again, this is not a horror movie.

Review: Captivity (2007)

Captivity
IMDB rate: 4,6
Genre: Survival, Torture

The movie Captivity is not really a good movie. It's not too bad but it's not good either. It's very slow at times and in a movie you want to figure out the motivations of the kidnappers/killers/tortures. In this movie it's the same story but unfortunately you'll never find out. I personally find it a sad thing because knowing the motivations can certainly improve a movie.
I've seen the movie once before and I was not impressed by it, now I've watched it again I feel the same to be honest. The movie has nothing special and doesn't really lead to something.

Top cover girl and fashion model, Jennifer Tree has it all - beauty, fame, money and power. Her face appears on covers of hundreds of magazines. At the top of her game, Jennifer is America's sweetheart. She is loved and adored and sought after. Everyone wants her. But someone out there has been watching and waiting. Someone wants her in the worst way. Out alone at a charity event in Soho, Jennifer is drugged and taked. Held captive in a cell, Jennifer is subjected to a series of terrifying, life-threatening tortures that could only be conceived by a twisted, sadistic mind. It follows the story of one woman who is abducted and tortured, held against her will in a place where days turn into weeks.

The movie starts of quite good, Jennifer appears to be a really tough girl who rather destroys the place than screaming for help. This was something remarkable for a horror movie, because in most cases, the girls are hopeless and do nothing than scream. Well, I was wrong with her. She appeared to be tough in the beginning but after a few scenes she becomes one of those desperate woman. It's sad really that there are not many more horror movies with a tough girl, For example, the movie Storm Warning. The girl really kicks ass. It's nice seeing something different like that for once.

Like I already mentioned, the guy that abducted her does not really seem to have a motive. He tortures her in dumb ways and then puts her in her room again. And this is going on and on. When she doesn't do something he wants to do he's playing a weird sound and makes the lights very bright, very scary....

The acting in the movie is reasonable, but I did expect a bit more from Elisha Cuthbert. I think she's an excellent actress but I was really disappointed by her performances in this movie. The plot is a bit weird and useless. Girl gets abducted, gets tortured, falls in love, escapes. Also, when you get abducted and you know you're being watched the entire time, why would you ever have sex in that occasion? That's the weirdest possible reaction ever. The movie itself is a bit confusing at times because the room is very dark most of the time. When something happens there mostly a lot of screaming and stuff but there's not much to see. It's very sad to say this but Captivity is also on of those movies that commits the biggest movie crime: killing an animal :(.

At some point you see what happened to the torturer because of a home movie he shows. This is really weird because there are two boys in the room and the mother, yet you see them all the entire time. Who the hell is filming?!
The movie has some very weird moments in it, which is kinda a bummer.

Not a very good movie, but it's not unwatchable. If you have very low expectations you might even start liking it!

Review: 7eventy 5ive (2007)

7eventy 5ive
IMDB rate: 4,6
Genre: Slasher

So last weekend I watched 7eventy 5ive again (why the stupid numbers written in the name?). From what I could remember it was a reasonable movie but after seeing it again... well, it appeared not to be.

Finals at the prestigious University of Dreyskill are finally over and it's time to party. "The Crew", as they are known by their peers and dorm mates, are invited to a rich classmate's hideaway mansion high up in the hills of Colorado. What was supposed to be a weekend of fun and relaxation quickly becomes a trip they will never forget... If they survive! A simple game of prank scare phone calls becomes an intense game of survival and escape when one of the Crew members accidentally calls the wrong person.

So at the beginning of this movie you see a bunch of children at a sleepover party while their parents also have a party. At this party the children call also a murderer who comes over and kills all the adults. At this point I'm wondering, there is only a very small chance that the person they called was nearby since I believe they can call anybody in America. So that's one strange thing. Also, why does the killer only kills the parents?

So after that you see a few teenagers going to the party, and it appeared that there are a few survivors from the last time. And really, one of them wants to play this damn prank game again! One of the kids who saw his parents slaughtered in front of his eyes! So of course, you know what's going to happen, the killer comes again. At this point I'm not entirely sure if it's the same guy because the movie is quite confusing. But again, they can call anybody in America (I believe) and they again call someone that is nearby?!

There is also a side story that the killer of the first time is searching for every kid that survived and kills them. A few cops are searching for him but are of course too late every time.

As you might have noticed, it's a weird story. I still don't get anything of it. Eventually one of them appeared to be the killer but he also has a twin brother suddenly or something who also appears to be the killer.

The acting is not that good, it's a weird bunch of friends and they appear to have no connection at all. Eventually you find out that there are two or three survivors of the first time in the group but you can't even see that they're supposed to know each other that long already.

The movie sets in a big house with a bunch of cameras. This is one of the most useless additions ever because at one point you see that a girl is watching the screens but for some reason she is still surprised when someone told her who got killed. She watched the screens! She could see for herself!

I seriously don't get this movie....

All together, not a great movie. Weirdest plot ever and the acting is that so good. There's much blood but that's the only fun in this movie.
Btw; sorry for the bad quality of the pictures.

First trailer Curse of Chucky!

When I saw the first stills of the movie I liked Chucky's look a lot, but seeing it now... meh.
His hair looks annoyingly long haha. And that moment when he squeezes his eyes... it looks a bit lame. Too CGI like. I'm still excited to see it though!
What do you think of it?

Review: Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000)

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
IMDB rate: 3,9
Genre: Supernatural

What a waste of time. I don't even know how I could be so stupid to watch this piece of shit again. Seriously, what the f* did I just watch. Why was this movie even released.

Yesterday I wrote a review about The Blair Witch Project, a movie that I loved very much. And for some reason, they made this sequel. They had so many options and they made this. WHY?!

To cash in on all of the "real-world" hype of the events in the first film, a man from Burkitsville, Maryland opens a "Blair Witch Hunt" tour, which shows patrons various locations from the original film. A bunch of college students decide to take the tour and wind up in Rustin Parr's house. There, they decide to camp for the evening, but in the morning, they realize they didn't sleep and they don't remember anything that happened the previous night. From there, they go back to town, and discover that something... or someone has come with them.

Okay, my guess is that someone wrote a script once and still had to fill up some details. At that point the brilliant movie The Blair Witch came out and they used The Blair Witch as the exit point for the script. This movie has nothing to do with the Blair Witch Project. It's mentioned a few times, they go to the house and stuff happens. Whatever happens is so incredibly dumb and dull that it could have been made up by a four year old. It's terrible. The only thing that had a bit of resemblance with the Blair Witch story was that their video tapes were removed. But even that was because of themselves.

Okay to start with, what was the whole point of showing Jeffrey in the mental house? Eventually they appeared all to be insane so it has absolutely no use. Second of all, most of the music used in this movie seems a lot like the music they play in a porno movie. Hearing this in a 'horror' is a bit uncomfortable as you can imagine.

The plot... oh my god it's so terrible I don't even know what to say about it. What was the point of making this movie?! It's absolutely not creative. The dialogues are terrible and incredibly lame.
And then there is the acting. A few actors are not even that unknown, but they were terrible. They acted so fake. And then there is this witch. 'Oh I'm a witch, blame me'. 'Oh I'm a witch, notice me'. What was the use of the addition of a witch to the movie?

What was the use of switching between handheld camera and normal style the entire time. Make a damn choice. It's pretty annoying after a while.
All I can say is, one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

I can't believe there are people who actually liked the movie. I seriously haven't seen a movie this bad ever. I absolutely do not recommend watching this. Not only is it terrible, it also has not much to do with the Blair Witch Project.

Review: Child's Play (1988)

Child's Play
IMDB rate: 6,4
Genre: Slasher

Last weekend I watched Child's Play. Unfortunately I can't watch Child's Play 2 and Child's Play 3 because they are very expensive to buy, so I'll have to wait until I find them cheap somewhere.
I'm really afraid for dolls, so as you can imagine I'm a big Chucky fan! This movie is fairly old and even thought there is not much movement in Chucky in the beginning, when he finally starts walking and killing it looks very real! I thought that it would look very fake but I was quite impressed by it.

When Charles Lee Ray needs to get quick escape from cop Mike Norris, he takes his soul and buries it into playful, seemingly good guy doll Chucky. Little does he know a little boy by the name of Andy Barclay will be the new owner of him soon-to-come. Charles confides in Andy while he commits numerous murders. Once the adults accept Andy's story as truth, it's too late.

As I already said, Chucky looks real good in this movie. Of course you notice that it's an older movie but I think it's excellent for that period. You see a lifeless Chucky for the first half of the movie and parts where he is walking is seen from his own eyes, at first I was very disappointed because I would love to actually see him walk. Luckily, I just needed to be patient. The second half of the movie was absolutely not disappointing because not only did Chucky walk, he became the fearless murderer he is known for!

I must admit that I also enjoy watching the comedic versions of Chucky, a.k.a. Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky. I just like how he looks in those movies and I think the comedic twist fits Chucky quite a bit. But, of course this is Child's Play, the serious Chucky version. I like how he looks in this movie, it's completely different than BOC or SOC but still very scary.

The acting in the movie is quite good, especially the very young Alexander Vincent plays remarkably well. He's adorable and very smart, it's impossible to not love this kid. And of course, there is Brad Dourif's voice as Chucky. If you ask me, I think it's the perfect voice for the scary doll.
The story is quite original in this movie. Even though the ending was a bit predictable, it was not a movie filled with cliches.

Many people say that they shouldn't have made Child's Play into a horror movie, but into a thriller. Meaning that Andy would appear to be the killer the whole time. I have to disagree with them because I think it's brilliant to use a simple doll as a murderer. Sure the story how he became the murderer might be a bit weak, but bringing a doll to life is one of the best moves in horror history. I never find a movie scary, unless there is a killer doll or killer clown in it. I can imagine that many kids watching the movie back then became a bit scared for their dolls as well.

I did see Child's Play a few times before but I've never seen the second and third Child's Play. I'll have to wait a bit longer before I'm able to watch those but I'm quite excited to see them eventually.

If you like a good suspenseful slasher movie then Child's Play is definitely recommended. It's not like the usual slasher cliche and brings in an unusual killer. I know that I liked it a lot!

My personal rate: 7,5/10
