Review: The Village (2004)

The Village
Imdb rate: 6,5
Genre: Monster

So, last week I finally watched the Village again. I bought it a long time ago and needed to find someone that wanted to watch it with me haha.
Since it was quite some time ago, since I last saw it, I couldn't remember much of it.

I have to start with saying that I think this movie is a bit underrated, there are many negative reviews about this movie, but I think it should have at least one good review: mine ;).

The Village is a horror/thriller about a amish town. They have a pact with the creatures from the forest not to bother each other. When a boy, Noah, gets in the forest without anybody knowing, there are starting to happen things. The creatures are coming to the town and leave warning for the people living there, not to come again. When something bad happens, Ivy, a blind girl, is forced to go in the forest, to reach the city and get some medicine.

What I really liked about this movie is the actors that played in it. When the movie came out in 2004, not many of the actors where really familiar. (Of course, with some exceptions) And since I was a bit younger back then, I also didn't know many actor names, but there are many actors in it, that are especially known for their acting performances in the last few years. To name a few: Jesse Eisenberg, Michael Pitt and Fran Kranz. And that's not even including the top cast that where already known/familiar back then: Bryce Dallas Howard, Sigourney Weaver, Adrien Brody, Joaquin Phoenix, Judy Greer and William Hurt.

I think Bryce Dallas Howard did a good job with playing a blind girl, not one moment seemed fake or acted. You might start thinking she is really blind. I must admit that I'm not really familiar with Adrien Brody's acting, so I can't really compare, but I liked him playing 'Noah'.

I liked this movie so much because it stands out from other horror movies that where made the last couple of years. M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs) never fails to amaze me with his plot twists, and this movie was just as suprising as the others.

I think there are many negative reviews because many people might think that the story will be as brilliant as in the Sixth Sense, it isn't. But, nevertheless it is surprising and original in my opinion.

If you like puzzle horrors or thrillers, this movie is excellent for you. Because you keep curious about what will happen next. I'm dying to tell the plot but I've promised not to give any spoilers so, please go watch it yourself ;D.

Maybe the slightest bad thing I have to say about this movie is that the story goes a bit too slow. Maybe there might have been a bit more action with the creatures, but that's just my opinion.

The first time I saw it I thought the movie wasn't that good, but now a few years later I'm really impressed with all the details you'll notice when you eventually know the plot.

My personal rate: 7/10

Review: 100 Feet (2008)

100 Feet
IMDB rate: 5,6
Genre: Ghost

I bought this movie a very long time ago, and I hadn't watched it yet because it didn't seem very interesting. But hey, can't leave it here dusting forever!

The movie starts with Marnie (Famke Janssen) coming home after three years of being in jail for murdering her abusive husband, Mike. She needs to stay at home for a year and can't leave the house because of a electronic ankle bracelet. Because of the ankle bracelet you know that there are going to happen things inside the house which she can't run for because the cops will be called and stuff.

At first the movie seemed to be good because there was a really good 'shock' in one scene and well, I don't get scared easily, but this frightened me for a few seconds. Because of this, I got fascinated by the movie and kept hoping for improvement, but that just terribly failed.

You see, Mike, the abusive husband came back as a ghost, a very angry, even more abusive ex-husband ghost. However the first shock-scene was good, the others where terrible. The ghost looks very lame, one time he is invisible, the other time he is a weird glowing.. thing. He just starts punching around people and making the walls all dirty and stuff, really inappropriate ;).

Ed Westwick also has a part in this movie as a grocery-delivering friend of Marnie, and it's funny to see how young he was in this movie. However, I am not a fan of his acting performance, he also seems to be too 'dark' or something. I don't know how to explain it. Famke Janssen is in my opinion a good actress, and she also acted very well in this movie.

Overall, this movie sucked. Apart from the good acting of Famke Janssen, and the one scary scene, it was just rubbish. The script was too predictable and lame. Famke Janssen was a bit too 'natural' about the fact that her dead husband is punching her around the room and throwing her of the stairs, which is of course, not very believable.

My personal rate: 4,5/10

Review: Amusement (2008)

Amusement
IMDB rate: 5,1
Genre: Revenge, Clown

I've watched this movie several times and for some reason, I just never remember what happened in the movie. I'm quite sure this isn't a good thing.
Well, let's start off with the fact that I am really terrified of clowns, that's probably why the movie seemed interesting to me, because I'm still searching for the ultimate scary clown movie (still haven't found it yet, unfortunately).

When you see this movies you'll probably think that the movie goes about the clown. Well, not really. That's just one segment. In fact, the movie goes about one crazy dude, that has a maniac laugh, likes to pretend he's some one else and has a fetish for cutting living things.

I'll have to say, there are several scenes in the movie that contain the scary clown, and these scenes are a bit scary, but that's about it, because this is probably the only good/scary scene in the movie.

This movie is just another 'gore' movie that is so popular these days, and is absolutely going nowhere. Starting of with the car that's lost in the woods, a babysitter that's getting stalked by some freak, and an 'abandoned' hotel with crazy people in it, well.. we've all seen them before. These 3 stories are coming together by some story about the youth from these three woman, which is making no sense at all.
Suddenly, one of the woman is seen in a 'FBI interrogation cell', and she's talking to a strange man (obviously the freaky dude) and after that, a woman comes talking with her. Well, all fine and stuff, but really madam, did you not notice, that you didn't quite walked in a FBI station, wasn't it noticeable that there wasn't any lights, or that it was abandoned as hell?! So of course, she get's killed.

The script seems to exist from random horror story ideas that are put together, and completed with a nonsense story. And even when you're fascinated by the script, it's still going way too slow, which makes you lose your focus (well, this might be the problem of why I never remember this movie).

In short, if you like random segments that contains a bit of joyride, a clown, a freak that put's living people in mattresses and a nonsense story, this is the perfect movie for you ;). Although the clown segment wás actually scary, the rest of the movie is a waste of time.

My personal rate: 5/10

- This has nothing to do with the review, but if anybody know actual scary movies with clowns or dolls, please let me know ;).

Review: Jennifer's Body (2009)

Jennifer's Body
IMDB rate: 5,1
Genre: Supernatural, Comedic

Friday I watched Jennifer's Body again, the last time I saw it, I wasn't really impressed with the movie. Well, neither was I this time. I must say I am a fan of Megan Fox as a person, because she seems to be down to earth and stuff, and of course she is very beautiful, but unfortunately, her acting performance is not that good. I did like the idea of humor and horror when I first heard of this movie, and of course, Megan Fox as the main character, never wrong to watch right? Well, the humor wasn't that good unfortunately, plus the script was very very bad. And there seemed to be no connection at all between the main characters Jennifer (Megan Fox) and Needy (Amanda Seyfried). They're suppose to be best friends and stuff, with a bit of jealousy maybe, but the two were just like two blank canvases to each other.

I have to say, Megan Fox' performance was better than in Transformers or How To Lose Friends And Alienate People, but still, too poor. Luckily she's pretty enough huh ;). I did like Amanda Seyfried's performance, because I mostly know her from movies like Mean Girls or Mamma Mia, and this was like something completely different from that, a bit more edgy or something.

There was a bit of gore in the movie, which was fun to watch. And the movie really tries to make a point it seems, the whole High School period, friends growing out of each other, impress boys and stuff, but half way through it seems to get lost in being an 'alternative' movie, so the story goes another way.

The movie isn't that bad to watch, it's just an entertaining movie that you just can't take serious. Or better said: please don't start watching this as a serious, good horror movie, because it simply isn't. The last thing I have to say that a big plus for this movie is the music. Really good!

My personal rate: 5,5/10

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

The Dark Knight Rises
IMDB rate: 8,8
Genre: Action

So I've FINALLY seen The Dark Knight Rises! It was so amazing. I'm a big fan of the Batman trilogy of Christopher Nolan and this last part just was exactly right as an ending. Of course it was a bit of an open ending, but I truly hope they won't continue further with the series because I'm afraid they mess it up. I was a bit late with seeing this one, because when it was at the theaters I didn't have money to go see it, and when I finally did had enough money, the movie didn't play anymore. So I had to wait until it came out and I was astonished of how amazing it was.

After I saw The Dark Knight I was absolutely sure they couldn't do it any better and that this part would be like way better than The Dark Knight Rises but eventually I just can't tell which part I like the most. I thought Heath Ledger was amazing as the Joker, and I've always loved him as an actor (R.I.P.) he is like the main reason for me why I like The Dark Knight so much, but after The Dark Knight Rises I'm just not sure anymore which I liked better. Batman Begins is also an amazing movie but I liked it less than The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

The only thing I did not like about The Dark Knight Rises was Bane's voice. It was a complete mismatch in my eyes, because he was like really big and strong and the voice was just.. not. If you know what I mean ;). Also, the sound mixing seemed very bad, but I'll have to admit that I saw a downloaded version, so I can't tell for sure if it was the download or the actual sound mixing.

For anybody that likes superheroes or Batman or just a good action movie, go and see this. It was truly amazing! (And with superheroes I don't mean like The Avengers, which I liked, but they are nothing compared to this trilogy)

Personal rate: 9,5/10
